How to: Make a Duck Harness

How to: Make a Duck Harness

After a lot of research, we finally just gave up and decided to make our own. Here are the things that you will need:

  • One pair of cloth scissors
  • needle and thread
  • cloth (as much as you think you need for your duck)
  • Velcro
  • A fabric pen (or any old pen, really)
  • and... a flexible tape measure for cloth
After you have gathered your supplies, you will need to measure your duck(s).

Step 1: Measuring
Remember your measurements. It helps to write them down.

First, measure the duck around the neck, close to its shoulders. Leave plenty of room for feathers, you don't want to strangle your duck. :)

Next measure your duck around the tail, just under the wing tips.

The third part of measuring is to measure your duck`s back from the neck where you measured it the first time down to the tail end where you measured it the second time.

The final measurement is down the chest and stomach, again from where you measured the first time to where you measured the second time.

Step 2: Cutting and Sewing

Okay, now you're finally done with the measuring, so you can start cutting out your pieces and sewing them together.
Actually, there is MORE measuring. Now you are going to measure the cloth into however many inches around your duck's neck is. Cut out the piece, and make it about and inch wide. Repeat with the other measurements. The shortest piece will probably be the one for the duck's neck, and the longest the one for the underbelly. When you sew on the Velcro, they will be on the neckband and the bottom band. Laid out, it should probably look like a capital I with another line coming off the top and connecting to the bottom. The first thing that we are going to sew is the back strip. So find the middle of the neck band and sew one end of the back strip to that. After that find the middle of the bottom strip and sew the other end of the back strip to that. Then sew one end of the belly strip to one of the ends of the neck strip.Sew the other end of the belly strip to one of the other ends of the bottom strip.

Step 3: Putting on the Harness
So you are finally ready to start putting on your duck`s harness. First you are going to lay it on their back, with the neckband on the neck and the bottom band on the bottom:

(Yes, we know this isn't a real duck. But stuffed swans don't wriggle)

Then you Velcro the neck band around the duck's neck, and the bottom band around the bottom. Stretch the belly strip down under them until it is between their legs.

Congratulations!  You finished your duck's harness! Now you can personalize it!
